Message From The President
|
|
I recently completed my first year as President and CEO of the Alliance. The Alliance contracts approximately $59,000,000 with
46 agencies to provide a wide variety of home and community-based services. This year, the Alliance successfully administered
procurement processes for Older Americans Act, Local Services Programs, and Alzheimers Disease Initiative funds. The Alliance
is currently administering the complex procurement of providers under the Community Care for the Elderly program. This
Fall we will do so likewise under the Older Americans Act.
We have restructured our operations to enhance support for our staff who carry out the complete responsibilities of the Alliance.
Recently, we hired Horacio Soberon-Ferrer, formerly Research Coordinator for the Department of Elder Affairs, as Director of Planning,
Organizational Development & Compliance. Our Board of Directors, under the leadership of Rosa M. Cozad, is in the process of completing
a new Strategic Plan for the Alliance, with a renewed emphasis on communication and partnership with the communities we serve, and on
development of new resources.
We also recently fully implemented our Aging Resource Center on April 1, 2008. The ARC is designed to enhance access by consumers
to long-term support through a coordinated, locally-focused approach to information and referral and the use of multiple access points
to the system. The ARC will make the delivery system more friendly to consumers by reducing fragmentation and by supporting individual
choice. It will improve fiscal control over limited public resources as well as enhance quality assurance.
We have completed a needs assessment of elders in both our counties, with support from the Health Foundation of South Florida.
These data enable the Alliance, and others, to measure the gaps between available services and needs identified in the census by zip code.
The Alliance, public officials, and our provider agencies are now able to utilize these data for helping to address critical gaps in
vital services and for advocacy for greater resources. Please go to the link on this website to review this important report.
In 2007, the Alliance was awarded funding by the National Council on the Aging and the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging
to educate and enroll eligible elders in the Medicare Low-Income Subsidy Program under Part D (for prescription medicines). We have
also established a new community partnership, Team Miami, which was selected by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to
participate in a National Hispanic Health Disparities Initiative. It is designed to educate professionals about disparities and to
mobilize our community to address them. Team Miami is focusing on diabetes.
I look forward to working with our Board, Advisory Council, and staff to continue strengthening the identity and visibility of
the Alliance for Aging. Together, we will strive to plan effectively on behalf of the older population in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.
