Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program.
The objective of this Program is to prevent the elderly from suffering
the effects of extreme heat or intense cold at home, by not having funds to cover the cost
of Energy Services.
The Program does provide Emergency funds to pay for Energy Services, on a first-come first-served
basis, once during the Heating Season, and once during the Cooling Season. The Program also provides
for the distribution of Blankets, Heaters, and the Weatherization of eligible dwellings.
EHEAP is administered through a group of Community Services Agencies, who in voluntary cooperation
with the Alliance for Aging, receive the clients, explain the program details, verify eligibility,
compile the corresponding documentation, submit the proper applicaitons, and keep file of all
applicants.
The EHEAP coordinator, working with the resources of the Alliance for Aging, and closely with
DOEA, provides assistance and support to the EHEAP Sites and Volunteers in order to fulfill the
objectives of the Program.
The Assistance and Support consist of:
- Providing information and training on the program to the volunteers.
- Supplying the necessary forms and documents and executing the direct
exchange the direct exchange with the various power and light companies, to secure the
avoidance of hte power cut-off and/or the return of the energy to the eligible household.
- Notification to the provider and to the client of the completed process.
- Elaboration of the different required periodic reports.
- Conducting of informational and training meetings, and
- Providing quick solutions to unexpected obstacles and problems, in keeping with
the emergency nature of the program.
