WINNERS OF THE 2010 POSITIVE AGING AWARDS

What:
With nearly 500,000 people age 60 or older, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties are national examples of America’s future. Older Americans make tremendous differences in the quality of life in South Florida by “giving back” to their community. On November 4, 2010, the Alliance for Aging will honor individuals who are examples of Positive Aging at the 4th ANNUAL POSITIVE LIVING AWARDS DINNER at Jungle Island. Awards are presented in the following distinct areas:

The Alliance for Aging:
The Alliance for Aging is a private, not-for-profit organization committed to improving the lives of older people through funding more than $60 million annually to local agencies. Through a network of providers, some of the services include:

  • 1.58 million meals served in senior centers and other facilities where elders congregate;
  • 1.51 million meals delivered to home-bound elders;
  • 1.2 million hours of in-home service such as personal care and homemaking for impaired elders;
  • 545,000 hours of caregiver respite and adult day care;
  • 444,000 trips for elders needing transportation services;
  • 45,000 hours of case management to coordinate the care of more than 5,000 individuals needing coordination of services and long term care planning;
  • Emergency energy assistance to pay for utility bills for 149 households;
  • Emergency assistance to help 263 elders referred by Adult Protective Services as being at high risk for abuse or neglect;
  • Answering 25,000 calls to provide accurate information about community resources.
